Joseph McCarthy was the man who accused many of being Communist in the 1950s, and held the famous trials of suspected Communists during this time also. But the question is, why would someone do something like this? Well, this article says that McCarthy would do almost anything in order to keep his government positions. He was originally a member of the Democrat party, but when he failed to get elected as district attorney, he switched to the Republican party. Also when McCarthy was running to become the Republican candidate for the Senate, he criticized his opponent for not signing up for the war. He showed himself in posters in full marine uniform, and described himself as completing 32 missions. In reality, McCarthy had a desk job and completed no missions in the marines. So, it was no surprise when McCarthy was up for re-election in the Senate, that he started accusing other people (especially of the Democratic party) of being Communist. It was an awful thing of him to do, he ruined many lives, and families. He was a horrible person and there is no possible way he could justify any of his actions. I am very glad he was exposed for the person he was.
