Squanto
Squanto was a Native American who greatly helped out the American colony of Plymouth. This colony was in great need since they were very unfamiliar with the area and needed help. Squanto was from a nearby Indian village, however, he had been to England as he was captured by one of John Smith's men but set free in England. So he was able to translate in between the tribe and the colony, which must have prevented a lot trouble. Squanto taught the colony how to plant maize, and how to catch herring which was needed for planting as fertilizer. He was a great communicator and his value to the colony must have been incredible. The colony literally did not know how to do anything. They didn't know the climate, the crops, the people, or the animals around them. Everything around them was unfamiliar and scary. Squanto and his tribe helped make things a little less scary. He taught them how to get their own food which is very important seeing as starvation was a very big problem around most colonies. He worked to make an alliance between the tribe and the colony which proved to be very good for both of them, seeing as the tribe had lost many to disease earlier that year. The colony was very lucky to have Squanto, without him, the Indians may have turned hostile and killed the already weak colony. Who knows how long the colony would have lasted without the information Squanto gave them about their environment and getting food, the colony was most likely going to fail. They were incredibly fortunate that he was around.
